During a recent paper-puppet workshop at a school in Asheville, students were invited to build buffalo. One student chose to represent a figure that appeared wounded and lifeless. When asked about the choice, the child explained that the puppet reflected how their people were harmed and killed during colonization.

It was not a moment of shock, but of historical awareness emerging through art.

History lives not only in textbooks, but in memory.
Before European colonization, it is estimated that 30 to 60 million American bison (buffalo) roamed North America. By the late 1800s, due to mass hunting and colonial expansion, their population was reduced to fewer than 1,000 animals. Today, while conservation efforts have increased their numbers to an estimated 200,000–500,000, truly free-roaming bison are rare, and the ecosystems they once shaped have
